Did the Israelites understand Genesis as symbolic ages… or ordinary days? Before they even received Genesis, God had already established the six and one pattern with manna in the wilderness: six days of gathering, one day of rest. Then in Exodus 20, God directly connects that pattern to Creation itself: “For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth…” The original audience already had the framework. Their context was clear.
