One of the major questions surrounding the formation of the Grand Canyon involves the enormous volume of missing sediment. If the canyon formed slowly through the gradual erosion of the Colorado River, we would expect the removed material to accumulate near the river delta. But much of the matching sedimentary material appears far to the west, including areas near the Los Angeles Basin and Salton Sea region. That distribution is far more consistent with large scale catastrophic water movement than with slow river erosion alone. Even some secular geologists acknowledge similarities between those western deposits and material eroded from the canyon region. The evidence raises important questions about whether the standard timeline fully explains what we observe today.
