Is your heart open enough to hear God's Word? | State of the Heart | 04 23 2026 Your Daily Portion Sabbath School Lesson with LD “The Anomaly” Harris (L. David Harris) The Bible is always powerful, but our ability to receive it depends greatly on the condition of our hearts. 1 Corinthians 2:14 explains why. The natural mind does not receive the things of the Spirit of God, because they seem foolish, and they must be spiritually discerned. In other words, Scripture is not merely an information problem, it is a heart problem. An open, humble heart will hear God differently than a closed, skeptical heart. Paul adds another key in 1 Thessalonians 2:13. God’s Word works in us when we receive it as what it truly is, the Word of God, and when we believe. Faith and expectation matter. When you open your Bible believing God has something to say to you, He speaks and He works. And even if faith feels small, God can grow it. “Lord, I believe, help my unbelief” is a real prayer God answers. One of Scripture’s purposes is to tell the truth about our spiritual condition and show us how to strengthen our relationship with God. If we come with childlike faith, humility, and openness to the Holy Spirit, we will leave changed, even if the growth is incremental. But if we cling to apathy, cherished sin, or the need to justify our opinions, Bible reading can do little good, not because the Word is weak, but because the heart is resisting. So the question becomes personal. Am I coming to the Bible to be corrected, or to be confirmed? That answer is everything.
