Is sin something to excuse, or something to confront through the gospel? | Sin, the Gospel, and the Law | 05 23 2026 Your Daily Portion Sabbath School Lesson with LD “The Anomaly” Harris (L. David Harris) Sin is not a small issue in Scripture. It is the great obstruction to close relationship with God. It separates, deceives, wounds, consumes, and if left unchecked, destroys. That is why the battle against sin and self is the greatest battle we face, because the consequences are not only present, but eternal. Our culture often normalizes sin, treating it as harmless, inevitable, or simply part of being human. And because society has grown comfortable with it, many people hesitate to call sin what it is. But the more comfortably we live with sin, the farther we drift from spiritual health and intimacy with God. This week’s lesson points us to hope, not despair. Yes, all have sinned. Our thoughts, motives, words, and actions damage others, ourselves, and our relationship with God. But God has not left us in darkness. He has given His law to reveal sin clearly, not to destroy us, but to show us our need. The law shines light on what is wrong, and the gospel points us to the only One who can restore what sin has broken. So this week we will explore why God gave His law, what sin really does, and who can restore the sinner to right relationship with God. Memory Text: “I will never forget Your precepts, for by them You have given me life. I am Yours, save me; for I have sought Your precepts.” (Psalm 119:93 to 94, NKJV) SCRIPTURE REFERENCES (This Week’s Study): Judges 14 Mark 9:42 to 48 Romans 3:20 Matthew 5:17 to 18 Romans 3:28 Matthew 7:24 to 29 Isaiah 59:2 KEY THEMES: Sin separates, deceives, and destroys Society may normalize sin, but Scripture exposes it God’s law reveals sin and gives moral clarity The gospel provides the only true restoration REFLECTION: Where have you been tempted to minimize sin because culture makes it seem normal? What would change if you let God’s law honestly reveal your need and drive you to Christ? PRAYER: Lord, help me not to excuse what You call sin. Let Your law reveal my true condition, and let Your gospel draw me into repentance, healing, and restored fellowship with You.
