Are you studying the Bible to win arguments, or to know God? | To Know God | 05 01 2026 Your Daily Portion Sabbath School Lesson with LD “The Anomaly” Harris (L. David Harris) The purpose of Bible study is not information, it is relationship. Scripture leads us to know God and grow close to Him, because eternal life is to know Him and remain with Him forever. Jesus invites this mutual engagement, “I stand at the door and knock.” He seeks fellowship, but we must respond by opening the Word and opening the heart. Because God is infinite, we will never reach the end of what can be learned about Him. Like a miner searching for precious jewels, we are called to dig, to search, and to keep seeking greater light. No matter how many times you have read a passage, there is always more to glean. Growth does not eliminate the need for continued searching, it increases it. This lesson also gives a warning about how we study. We must not drive stakes of doctrine first and then force Scripture to fit our established opinions. Instead, we bring our ideas to the Bible and measure them by the Scriptures of truth. The danger is subtle, even those who teach the Bible can miss the precious truth if they assign meanings that suit their own views. True Bible study is humble, thorough, and willing to be corrected. So the heart question is simple. Are we coming to Scripture to be transformed, or to be confirmed? God’s Word is meant to lead us into deeper fellowship with Christ, and to shape our beliefs by truth, not by preference. SCRIPTURE REFERENCES: John 5:39 John 17:3 Revelation 3:20 KEY THEMES: Bible study is for relationship, knowing God is eternal life Jesus seeks mutual engagement, but we must respond There is always more light to discover in Scripture We must measure our opinions by the Bible, not force the Bible to fit us REFLECTION: Where are you most tempted to make Scripture fit your opinions instead of letting it correct you? What is one belief or habit you need to re measure by the Word of God this week? PRAYER: Lord, draw me into real fellowship with You through Your Word. Make me humble, teachable, and willing to be corrected, so I can know You more deeply.
