Why does fear hit right after a breakthrough? | Elijah, Praying in Crisis | 05 10 2026 Your Daily Portion Sabbath School Lesson with LD “The Anomaly” Harris (L. David Harris) Elijah had just experienced one of the greatest answers to prayer in Scripture at Mount Carmel. God’s power was undeniable, and the nation saw that the Lord answers prayer. Yet 1 Kings 19 shows how quickly the human heart can shift when exhaustion and threat collide. At the heart of Elijah’s dejection is weariness that opened the door to fear. Jezebel’s threat of death overwhelmed him, and in that depleted state, fear overpowered faith. He moved from bold public victory to private discouragement, not because God changed, but because Elijah’s emotional, mental, and physical strength was drained. God’s response in crisis is very different from Mount Carmel. On Carmel, God answered with fire and public demonstration. In the wilderness, God answered with tenderness. He gave Elijah sleep, food, and water, and strengthened him for the journey. And when God finally revealed Himself, it was not through wind, earthquake, or fire, but through a still small voice. The lesson is clear, sometimes God answers with power that shakes a nation, and sometimes He answers with quiet care that restores a weary soul. This is practical prayer. When you are in crisis, do not assume God is absent because He is not dramatic. His ways are higher than ours, and His presence may come as provision, rest, and a gentle word that rebuilds faith one step at a time.
