What should fill our prayers? | Praise, Confession, Requests, Thanksgiving | 05 13 2026 Your Daily Portion Sabbath School Lesson with LD “The Anomaly” Harris (L. David Harris) Jesus did not teach us to pray as though prayer were only a list of needs. In Matthew 6, He showed us that prayer is relational, thoughtful, and full. It is speaking to God as a friend, but with reverence, honesty, and trust. Daniel’s prayer in Daniel 9 gives us a beautiful example of this kind of prayer. Daniel’s prayer includes praise, confession, requests, and appeal for God’s mercy. He begins by honoring God’s greatness, faithfulness, and covenant love. He does not rush past God’s character to get to his needs. Then he confesses sin plainly, not only personal failure, but the sins of his people. His prayer is humble, honest, and without excuses. This pattern helps shape our own prayer lives. Praise lifts our eyes to who God is. Confession keeps our hearts open and clean before Him. Requests bring our real burdens, decisions, relationships, and needs into His presence. Thanksgiving reminds us that even in difficulty, God has already been kind, faithful, and near. Too often our prayers are heavy on requests and light on worship, repentance, and gratitude. But when prayer includes all these parts, it becomes deeper and more transformative. We are not just asking God for things. We are being drawn into fellowship with Him. So the invitation is simple. Praise Him for who He is. Confess what needs to be surrendered. Bring your requests honestly. Thank Him for both the great blessings and the daily mercies you often overlook. This kind of prayer changes not only what we say, but who we become.
