Are your prayers sincere, or are they a performance? | Jesus Teaches Us How to Pray | 05 12 2026 Your Daily Portion Sabbath School Lesson with LD “The Anomaly” Harris (L. David Harris) In Jesus’ day, long, polished prayers were often admired, especially when they sounded impressive in public. But Jesus exposed that kind of praying for what it really was, a performance. In Matthew 6:5 to 8, He warns against praying to be seen and against empty repetition. God is not impressed by length, volume, or vocabulary. He desires sincerity. The disciples noticed something different about Jesus. Prayer was not a religious show for Him, it was a vital part of His life. He often withdrew to pray, sometimes all night, sometimes in crisis, sometimes at meals, sometimes in solitude. Watching Him, they realized they had never truly understood prayer, so they asked, “Lord, teach us to pray.” Jesus answered by giving a simple, heart level model (Luke 11:2 to 4; Matthew 6:5 to 15). This prayer is not just words to repeat, it is a pattern that shapes the heart: Our Father in heaven: Prayer begins with relationship, not distance. Hallowed be Your name: Reverence, God is holy. Your kingdom come: Longing for Christ’s return and the Spirit’s rule now. Your will be done: Surrender, trusting God’s wisdom above our desires. Give us this day our daily bread: Dependence for physical and spiritual needs. Forgive us as we forgive: Repentance and a forgiving spirit toward others. Deliver us from evil: Protection and shelter in a dangerous world. Yours is the kingdom, power, and glory: Worship, everything belongs to God. Practical prayer is simple, sincere, and surrendered. It is not about sounding spiritual. It is about staying close to the Father.
