If God already knows, why should we still pray? | Other Questions About Prayer | 05 14 2026 Your Daily Portion Sabbath School Lesson with LD “The Anomaly” Harris (L. David Harris) If God already knows everything, why pray? Prayer is not about informing God of what He does not know. It is about opening our hearts to receive what He is ready to give. As Ellen G. White explains, prayer does not bring God down to us, but brings us up to Him. Prayer slows us down, lifts our minds above the noise of life, and reminds us that God is sovereign. Prayer is also necessary when life feels stable and good. One of the greatest threats to a healthy prayer life is self sufficiency. When we think we are managing well on our own, prayer begins to feel optional. But Jesus said blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, and Isaiah says God pours water on the thirsty. Prayer keeps us aware of our need and keeps our hearts dependent on God. Faith also plays a central role in prayer. Hebrews 11:6 teaches that we must believe that God is and that He rewards those who seek Him. Prayer and faith work together. We ask in harmony with God’s will, trust His promises, and believe before we see outward evidence. That is not presumption. It is confidence in the character and Word of God. This lesson also reminds us that prayer should happen in more than one setting. We need private prayer, where our relationship with God is nurtured in secret. We need family and small group prayer, where faith is strengthened together. And we need church prayer, where the body of Christ seeks God in unity. All three matter. Finally, prayer is not only speaking. It is also listening. The safest way to hear God is not by chasing impressions or emptying the mind, but by combining prayer with Scripture. God speaks clearly through His Word. As we pray and read, He corrects, comforts, convicts, and shapes us. So the real issue is not whether God knows. He does. The issue is whether we are willing to come, depend, believe, and listen.
