What if faith is strongest when feelings are weakest? | Faith Is Not a Feeling | 05 19 2026 Your Daily Portion Sabbath School Lesson with LD “The Anomaly” Harris (L. David Harris) Jesus said that faith as small as a mustard seed can move mountains. That tells us two things. First, faith matters deeply. Second, even small faith can be powerful when it is placed in a great God. But mustard seed faith is not meant to stay small. Like the seed itself, faith should grow. Ephesians 2:8 reminds us that we are saved by grace through faith, and that salvation is the gift of God. Faith is not something we invent out of thin air. It is the human response to God’s gracious initiative. Through the Holy Spirit, God draws us to Himself, awakens trust, and invites us to respond. So no one can rightly say, “I do not have faith because God has given me none.” God has already moved toward us in grace. This lesson also makes an important distinction. Faith is not a feeling. Many people wait to feel close to God before they believe, obey, or pray with confidence. But feeling is not faith. Faith trusts God whether the heart feels warm or cold, clear or confused. It holds on in darkness, in storms, and in seasons when God seems distant. That means our religious experience must not be ruled by emotion. Feelings can change quickly, but God’s character does not. When we feel far from Him, that is often the very moment to exercise faith most intentionally. Like the father who cried, “Lord, I believe; help my unbelief,” we bring our weakness honestly to God and trust Him anyway. So faith is not pretending everything feels fine. It is choosing to believe God’s Word above unstable emotion. It is fixing our eyes on Jesus, refusing to give up, and claiming His promises even before our feelings catch up.
